Sorry if I look a bit dumb by asking this, but what do you mean by published? (3rd post above mine I think)

I'm a bit envious of you by the way, I could probably never go through with transitioning.

Published basically means selling a story you wrote. Short stories are generally sold to fiction magazines, while novels are sold to publishing companies (they print the novel and advertise it).
